Build Alaska's Future

Lemon Creek Correctional Center (LCCC) Repair and Renovation (Juneau, AK)

The Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau is undergoing a major $5–10 million state-funded repair and renovation effort led by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. Prompted by structural instability caused by aging infrastructure and extreme wet weather, the project began in July 2023 following a competitive RFP process. Construction includes foundational repairs, upgrades to walls, floors, detention doors, and building systems, as well as the transformation of the facility’s chapel into a dedicated medical and dental space.

Infrastructure investments like the ongoing renovation at Lemon Creek Correctional Center help ensure the safety, stability, and long-term functionality of Alaska’s correctional facilities.

To ensure safety, approximately 20% of inmates were temporarily relocated during the most intensive construction phase. The project is generating local employment across construction, project management, and ongoing maintenance fields that support skilled workers and contributing to Juneau’s economy. Substantial completion is targeted for August 2024, at which point inmate capacity and medical services will be fully restored.

Structural instability from extreme weather prompted major upgrades—ensuring secure, functional infrastructure for staff and inmates alike.
