To meet growing healthcare needs and reduce patient outmigration, Bartlett Regional Hospital launched a multi-phase diagnostic imaging expansion in Juneau. The project introduced state-of-the-art equipment, including Alaska’s first high-end MRI system and dual CT scanners, enabling advanced cardiac CT and stroke diagnostics.
Backed by $2.5 million in city funding — with another $2.5 million under consideration — the expansion is part of a larger initiative to modernize Bartlett’s services and infrastructure. Federal support has complemented these efforts, including $4 million dedicated to emergency department upgrades.
The MRI expansion is also a catalyst for job creation. Bartlett is hiring for positions such as MRI Technologist II, offering competitive wages and contributing to a more robust healthcare workforce in Southeast Alaska.

Construction and installation have involved local labor, with likely participation from unions such as IBEW and the Alaska Carpenters, following regional trends for major healthcare builds. With installations completed between 2021 and 2023, the hospital now offers faster, safer scans and an improved patient experience.
