Build Alaska's Future

Anchorage Downtown Library

The Anchorage Downtown Library project, led by the Anchorage Public Library and the Anchorage Library Foundation, aims to bring a vibrant public library back to the heart of the city for the first time since 1986. Fueled by a $7.2 million bequest from long-time residents Janet and John Goetz, the vision includes internet access, open design, and possibly a café, creating a welcoming civic hub near Town Square Park.

Envisioned as a bright, open space full of natural light and community life, the Anchorage Downtown Library project is poised to become a cornerstone of civic revitalization.

Guided by a Downtown Library Exploration Committee and shaped by community input, the library is envisioned as a key piece of downtown revitalization. As of 2018, business plans were under review, with the library positioned as a cornerstone for equitable access and urban renewal.

With sweeping glass walls, natural light, and modern wood-accented interiors, the vision for the Anchorage Downtown Library reflects both transparency and warmth. This civic space is designed to welcome everyone.
