ClerkStart: The Heartbeat of Local Government
Municipal and tribal clerks are the unsung heroes of Alaska. They are the vital stewards ensuring the smooth functioning of civic life in towns, small cities, and tribal entities across our state. From running elections and protecting public records to supporting councils and keeping daily operations moving, clerks are the heartbeat of more than 230 Alaska communities. The ClerkStart initiative is Build Alaska’s Future’s commitment to strengthening public trust and expanding Alaska’s civic workforce. By highlighting the importance of mentorship and illuminating career pathways, we aim to ensure that our local governments remain resilient, transparent, and staffed by Alaskans ready to lead.
A New Storytelling Initiative
As the centerpiece of this initiative, we are producing a high-quality short film to uplift the voices of Alaska’s local government heroes. This project will go beyond the basics of job descriptions to capture the spirit of service that defines our communities.
From the cultural stewardship in Saxman to the regional hub dynamics of Bethel, we are documenting the diversity, resilience, and dedication of Alaska’s clerks. This film will serve as a powerful tool to document our civic history, honor experienced mentors, and inspire the next generation of Alaskans to pursue rewarding careers in local governance.
